GROVETON, VA — A fatal crash involving a Metrobus, van and taxicab was reported on Richmond Highway south of Alexandria City Monday morning, according to Fairfax County Police. The taxicab driver from Alexandria has died.

Around 10:04 a.m. Monday, Fairfax County Police responded to calls about a three-vehicle crash in the northbound direction in the 6300 block of Richmond Highway in Fair Haven. Capt. Jesse Katzman, a spokesperson for Fairfax County Police, said at an afternoon news briefing that a Metro bus was stopped behind traffic at a traffic light when a taxicab driver approached at a high rate of speed. The Toyota Camry taxicab struck a 2014 Toyota Sienna van, which in turn hit the Metro bus.

The taxicab driver, an adult man, was pronounced dead at the scene. Katzman said two of the three van occupants have life-threatening injuries, and the other has non-life-threatening injuries. All van passengers were adults. The two people with life-threatening injuries remain hospitalized.

"Anytime we have loss of life it's extremely tragic, and in this case as you guys can see there is significant damage to both the van and to the taxi," said Katzman.

Detectives preliminarily do not suspect alcohol was a factor in the crash, but speed is being investigated as a factor. Fairfax County Police's Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating the crash with support from Metro Transit Police and Metro. Police have video footage from the crash.
