Faulty School Zone Speed Camera Resulted In 115 Bogus Citations In West End: Report

ALEXANDRIA, VA – The Alexandria Police Department will be dismissing or refunding six months’ worth of speeding tickets after one of its school zone speed limit cameras was discovered to be malfunctioning, according to a new report.

ALX Now reports that the school zone speed camera recording eastbound traffic on Seminary Road at Francis C. Hammond Middle School issued 115 citations outside of its enforcement period, which is supposed to cover only school arrival and dismissal times. The errors occurred between Aug. 18, 2025, and Feb. 26, 2026.

APD says relevant citations have been dismissed and that they are refunding any that have already been paid, the outlet reports. APD also says their other school zone speed cameras are working correctly.

Driving speeds are limited to 15 mph in school zones during arrival and dismissal times. The city lists its school zone speed camera locations here.

School cameras will be active again when Alexandria public schools begin on Aug. 24. (Classes have already begun at Samuel Tucker Elementary School, which operates on an extended calendar, but the city does not have a school zone speed camera there.)
