Fines Eliminated At Alexandria Library Locations

Various regional library systems have eliminated fines with the goal of increasing access.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandria Library announced Thursday it has eliminated fines for overdue library materials.

The change was effective July 1 and intends to improve access to library materials. Most other regional library systems have eliminated fines.

All existing overdue fines have been removed from accounts. Patrons will no longer accrue daily overdue or late fines on materials beyond the due dates.

While overdue fines were eliminated, the replacement cost fee, processing fee, and referral fee for recovery of delinquent accounts remain in place. Patrons are encouraged to return items on time so other patrons can enjoy them. Items not returned within 42 days of the due date are considered lost, and patrons will be charged for a replacement.

Books, audiobooks, CDs, periodicals and DVDs may be renewed up to three times. Patrons can renew in person, by contacting a branch, calling 703-746-1794, or by logging into their account online.
