Flood Mitigation, Rail: Learn About Projects Around King Street Metro
From rail and intersection improvements to flood mitigation, projects around the King Street Metro will be the focus of an open house.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Numerous projects being planned around the King Street Metro and Alexandria Union Station will be the focus of an upcoming open house.
From flood mitigation to rail improvements and intersection improvements, various projects will be covered at the open house. The open house will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Oct. 4 at Alexandria VRE Union Station, 110 Callahan Drive, Alexandria, VA. The open house will be a drop-in for attendees to learn about the projects, and a brief presentation will be held at 6 p.m.

- Hooffs Run Culvert Bypass: Major flood mitigation project in design
- Fourth Track Project: Adding a fourth rail track for six miles between Arlington and Alexandria to address bottlenecks for Virginia Railway Express trains
- King & Commonwealth Rail Bridges: Design options are being considered for the King Street and Commonwealth Avenue rail bridges replacements
- VRE Station Improvements: Virginia Railway Express station improvements to improve rider access to platforms are in the final design phase
- Commonwealth Interceptor Inflow and Infiltration Study: A study is underway on capacity issues with the Commonwealth Interceptor sanitary sewer system serving Del Ray, Rosemont, and North Ridge
- King & Commonwealth Streetscape Improvements: Improvements are being considered for the streetscape for pedestrians and cyclists near the King Street Metro Station amid the fourth track and rail bridge replacement projects
- King-Callahan-Russell Intersection Improvement Project: Construction will begin in October for intersection improvements to improve pedestrian and bicyclist access to transit
- Hooffs Run Culvert Structural Repairs Project: Construction is underway to repair damage to a section of Hooffs Run Culvert in Hooffs Run Park and Greenway from the 2019 and 2020 flood events.
