WASHINGTON, DC — A flood warning and a flash flood watch have been issued for the Washington, D.C.-northern Virginia region after 3 inches of rain fell early Thursday, which caused flooding in some areas, the National Weather Service said.

Heavy rain is likely later Thursday, forecasters said, with a half-inch to an inch possible before storms wrap up around 2 p.m.

The flood warning covers northwestern District of Columbia, Arlington County eastern Fairfax County, Alexandria and Falls Church in northern Virginia. The warning expires at 2 p.m.

At 7:28 a.m., local law enforcement reported flooding was ongoing in the warned area, where 1 and 3 inches of rain had already fallen. Rock Creek has been reported out of its banks.

Some locations expected to see flooding include: Arlington, Alexandria, Annandale, Springfield,
Vienna, Falls Church, Fort Belvoir, McLean, the American Legion Bridge, Rosslyn and Crystal City.

The DC-northern Virginia area is also under a flash flood watch until 2 p.m. Thursday.

And a coastal flood advisory is in effect until noon with up to one foot of water above ground level in low-lying areas due to tidal flooding. The shoreline in the District of Columbia, Arlington County, and the city of Alexandria are affected.

Water is expected to approach the curb near the intersection of King Street and Strand Street in Alexandria.

Thursday: Rain and possibly a thunderstorm before 11am, then scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly between 11am and 2pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. High near 74. Northwest wind around 7 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Thursday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 54. North wind 3 to 5 mph.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 74. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph.
