Future Of Accessory Dwelling Units To Be Studied In Alexandria

The city is looking at creating a policy allowing the construction of accessory dwelling units, also known as in-law suites.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandria's government is beginning the process to allow accessory dwelling units, more commonly known as in-law suites, in the city. That process would ultimately lead to the city developing zoning ordinance amendments permitting the construction of accessory dwelling units.

Alexandria City Council’s 2020 work plan calls for an accessory dwelling unit program to expand availability of affordable, quality housing. An accessory dwelling units is a separate living unit, and it can take the form of a basement converted to an apartment, an addition to a home, apartment over a garage, conversion of a detached garage or a backyard cottage. It can be distinguished from renting out part of a home because it is a separate living unit with its own entrance, bathroom and kitchen.

According to the city's accessory dwelling unit process website, accessory dwelling units could provide rental income for homeowners at risk of being priced out of Alexandria, provide options for multi-generational families and caregivers, and boost housing affordability for the workforce.

The city will hold community meetings to gather feedback on how what the accessory dwelling unit program should look like. City staff would then develop proposals to allow accessory dwelling units in Alexandria. These proposed development standards and regulations would likely go to the Planning Commission and City Council for action on June 25 and July 7, respectively.

The community meetings will happen Thursday, March 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Mount Vernon Recreation Center (2701 Commonwealth Avenue) and Monday, March 30 at 6:30 p.m. at Beatley Library (5005 Duke Street). A public survey on possible implementation options will be open on March 12 on the accessory dwelling unit process website. A third meeting to discuss the first meetings and survey will be scheduled in early April.
