Goats Are Coming To Alexandria To Munch Their Way Through Invasive Plants

A herd of goats will spend up to 10 days grazing on invasive plants at All Veterans Park as part of a new Alexandria pilot program.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandria is bringing in a four-legged landscaping crew this fall, with a herd of goats set to spend several days munching invasive plants in one of the city's parks.

The goats will arrive at All Veterans Park beginning Sept. 8 as part of a new pilot program from the city's Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities.

They'll spend about five to 10 days grazing on invasive vegetation along the park's slopes, depending on how quickly they work through the plants.

City officials said goats offer an environmentally friendly way to control invasive plants, particularly on steep slopes, in wooded areas and other places that can be difficult to reach with traditional landscaping equipment. A crew will return in about 1 to 2 weeks for additional work.

The goats will remain at the park throughout the project and will be kept behind a temporary electric fence that will be inspected daily. A handler will provide fresh water and monitor the animals.

Visitors should not enter the fenced area or attempt to pet or feed the goats. Children should also remain outside the enclosure.

Dog owners are being asked to keep their pets leashed and away from the livestock. The city recommends that owners of dogs that are particularly reactive toward livestock consider leaving their dogs at home while the goats are at the park.

The pilot will also give residents a chance to learn more about invasive species, native plants and environmental stewardship.

The city plans to release additional details before the goats arrive.
