Greenleaf Juicing Company: Coming to King Street?

Establishment would offer fresh juices and soups blended on-site from fresh fruits and vegetables.

The space at 1309 King Street in Old Town Alexandria has seen it all: It’s been a wine shop, a real estate office, a flower shop, a clothing store....could Greenleaf Juicing Company be the perfect fit?

The location is near Snap Fitness and Pacers, two businesses with clientele who might drop in for some fresh-pressed juice.

The proposed juice bar is a staple in Portland, Ore. where it got its start and currently had four stores beckoning customers with 100 percent organic, raw fresh-pressed juices, smoothies and steamed soups. See the menu here.

If the plans go forward, the Alexandria location would be the first Greenleaf Juicing Company to put down roots in the DC metro area.

The proposed hours for the King Street juicing spot are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays. The proposal calls for seating for 15 inside and two outside, noting that the spot is primarily designed to be a to-go spot.

In Portland, the company got its start first as a food cart before it graduated to a brick and mortar location. It got its start in July 2011, according to its Facebook page. In addition to the proposed Alexandria spot, others may be opening in the Chicago area.

The owner of a spa on the second floor has aired concerns that the restaurant’s juice-making sounds might hurt her business, where customers come to relax. The proposal to the city noted that the sound from the juicer shouldn’t be audible through building walls.

The planning commission has recommended that the proposal for Greenleaf Juicing Company go forward. A planning commission hearing is Nov. 6.
