Six-story building on site of Giant grocery store will have apartments, restaurants and stores.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Construction is due to begin soon on a retail-residential project in Old Town, on the site of a former Giant grocery store, according to a media report.
City officials and representatives from two development companies gathered Wednesday for a groundbreaking ceremony at the site, at the corner of First Street and North Pitt Street, radio station WTOP reported.
The six-story project, to be called Gables Old Town North, will include 50,000 square feet of restaurant and retail space on the ground floor and 232 apartments. The project is at 530 First St., several blocks from the Potomac River.
