Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Center To Reopen Saturdays In Alexandria

ALEXANDRIA, VA — The City of Alexandria will reopen the Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Center for one day a week starting on Saturday, May 16. The limited opening is intended for residents who cannot store materials at home indefinitely for reasons such as moving. Others are encouraged to store materials until normal operations resume.

The center will operate Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. On April 28, the city opened a yard waste drop-off site, which runs on Tuesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. For city collection customers, curbside collection of yard waste, bulk material, and metal remains suspended.

Residents may only bring materials to the site during open hours. Dumping materials outside the gate could lead to a maximum penalty of a $2,500 fine or one year in jail.

The drop-off center is only open to City of Alexandria residents. Proof of residency, such as a driver's license or utility bill, must be provided to staff at the site. Residents must enter the site in vehicles; anyone walking materials to the site will not be allowed to enter.

Upon arriving, vehicles will enter a queue and wait for instruction to enter the site. Staff will provide a utility cart for materials, but residents are responsible for unloading materials from vehicles into the cart. After unloading, residents should return to their vehicles so staff can take the cart.

Residents are asked to follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance on physical distancing and wearing cloth face coverings when dropping off materials.
