Here’s How Virginia, DC Populations Changed Between 2016 And 2017
New population estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau show how much DC, Virginia's population grew between 2016 and 2017.

WASHINGTON, DC — A majority of 2017’s fastest growing cities in the United States are in the South and seven of the country’s 15 fastest-growing cities are in Texas, according to new population estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau on Thursday.
The Census also released a list of the 15 cities with the largest population gains and a majority of those cities were also in the south. The population estimates released Thursday are for cities, boroughs, villages towns and townships and are current as of July 1, 2017.
Virginia’s population as of July 1, 2017 is 8,470,020, according to the Census. That’s an increase from 8,414,380 a year earlier, or about 55,000 to the state’s population between 2016 and 2017 and a growth rate of 0.66 percent. The state’s growth rate was slightly lower than the nation’s growth rate of 0.7 percent.

The District's population as of July 1, 2016 is 693,972, according to the Census, up from 684,336 in 2016.

Here’s how the population changed in Virginia communities between 2016 and 2017:
- Arlington County: 2016 population, 231,610; 2017 population, 234,965
- Fairfax County: 2016 population, 1,144,636; 2017 population, 1,148,433
- Fauquier County: 2016 population, 68,784; 2017 population, 69,465
- Henrico County: 2016 population, 326,147; 2017 population, 327,898
- Loudoun County: 2016 population, 386,279; 2017 population, 398,080
- Prince William County: 2016 population, 456,560; 2017 population, 463,023
- Alexandria city: 2016 population, 157,288; 2017 population, 160,035
- Fairfax city: 2016 population, 23,827; 2017 population, 24,097
- Falls Church city: 2016 population, 13,868; 2017 population, 14,583
- Fredericksburg city: 2016 population, 28,271; 2017 population, 28,360
- Manassas city: 2016 population, 41,457, 2017 population, 41,501
- Manassas Park city: 2016 population, 16,085; 2017 population, 16,591
The Census also released new information on housing units. According to the Census, the nation’s housing stock grew by more than 1 million between 2016 and 2017, reaching over 137 million units. The growth rate of 0.8 percent was slower than the 1.4 percent growth rate a decade ago, between 2006 and 2007.
