How Alexandrians Turned Out For Redistricting, Special City Council Votes

High turnout for Alexandria's city council special election was likely driven by interest in Virginia's redistricting proposal.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Turnout for Alexandria’s special city council election on Tuesday was 44 percent, according to provisional data from the Virginia Department of Elections.

According to the department, of the city’s 116,366 registered voters, 51,256 cast ballots. There was only a small difference between the number of people who opted to vote early or mail in a ballot and those who voted on election day: about 44 percent of ballots counted were mailed in or taken during early voters. About 55 percent of total counted ballots were cast on election day.

The turnout for the last city council race, which shared a ballot with general election candidates, was 68 percent. But election day turnout for the city’s most recent special election, to fill a school board seat in 2024, was just over 6.5 percent.
