Bib Gourmand Awardee's Sister Restaurant Opens In Old Town Alexandria

ALEXANDRIA, VA — The sister restaurant of Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand restaurant Karma Modern Indian is ready to open in Old Town Alexandria. The opening of Kismet Modern Indian fills a commercial space that was last occupied by BurgerFi in 2017.

Kismet Modern Indian opens for takeout on Tuesday, Nov. 2 starting at 4 p.m. at Alexandria's Tavern Square, 111 N. Pitt Street. The soft opening phase will offer takeout only until indoor dining opens on Wednesday, Nov. 10.

The restaurant comes from founders Sachin Mahajan and Ricky Singh and Executive Chef Ajay Kumar, who will bring his award-winning cuisine from Karma Modern Indian in downtown Washington, DC. Mahajan is an international financial executive who opened Karma Modern Indian in 2017 to provide DC diners with authentic contemporary Indian cuisine and make Indian approachable for all occasions. He and Chef Kumar are natives of New Delhi and seek to bring high-quality food, drinks and service in a stylish setting. DC's Karma Modern Indian earned the Michelin Guide's Bib Gourmand designation in 2021 for value-focused dining.

Kismet Modern Indian's take on Indian cuisine incorporates high-quality ingredients and time-honored cooking techniques. The menu offers favorite dishes like chicken tikka and lamb seekh kebab, appetizers like tangy sweet potato and Calcutta jhaal muri, entrées like snapper peri-peri, grilled lamb chops, homestyle chicken curry, and butter paneer. There will be one menu covering lunch and dinner service. A full bar and wine list will also be available for diners.

Kismet Modern Indian was designed by Anila Angeli of A-Line Architecture, offering a modern design to go with the name. The interior showcases a statement candle wall, unique wine storage, and suspended luminaires. An outdoor courtyard patio with heating offers a dining space away from Old Town traffic.

Hours for Kismet Modern Indian will be open Wednesday and Thursday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from noon to 10 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m.
