A La Lucia Pushes Back Closing Amid Old Town North Redevelopment

A favorite spot for Italian announced a new closing date amid planned redevelopment for an Old Town North property.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — A La Lucia, a popular spot for Italian food in Alexandria's Old Town North, pushed back its anticipated closing date.

A La Lucia, located at 315 Madison Street, announced on social media it expects to close in spring 2024. The restaurant previously expected to close by the end of 2023, ALX Now had reported.

A La Lucia is one of the restaurants impacted by redevelopment plans for the Montgomery Center, a space with commercial tenants between Madison and Montgomery Streets. In the spring, developer Carr Companies received approval for a redevelopment of Montgomery Center into a mixed-use development. Plans include a multifamily residential building, an arts and culture anchor, ground floor retail and two public plazas.

Tenants were left to find new locations or plan closings. A La Lucia has indicated it will not reopen in a new location, according to ALX Now. Another tenant, Crooked Beat Records, found a new home in Del Ray.

Meanwhile, the nonprofit Art League secured a lease extension on its Montgomery Center space at 305 Madison Street through June 30, 2024. The Art League noted after it leaves at the end of June 2024, Carr Companies is planning to break ground on the redevelopment in July 2024. The Art League is planning a new location for its art school at 800 Slaters Lane.

A La Lucia will be open on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and closed Dec. 25 and 26. Regular hours are planned Dec. 27 to 30, and New Year's Eve hours will be 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. The restaurant will be closed on Jan. 1 and 2. Regular hours will resume at 5 p.m. on Jan. 3.
