Landmark Mall Re-Planning Process Begins

The Howard Hughes Corporation has said it's ready to move the redevelopment forward.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—The city will begin replanning for the Landmark Mall redevelopment with updates to the existing plan with community input. Redevelopment had been delayed for years, but the Howard Hughes Corporation, which owns part of the mall site, said it's ready to move redevelopment forward.

Replanning will kick off with community meetings. The dates and locations are as follows:

  • Meeting: Wednesday, Nov. 14, 7 p.m.-9 p.m. in the Cameron Station Great Room (200 Cameron Station Blvd.)
  • Open house: Wednesday, Dec. 12, 7 p.m.-9 p.m. at Brandywine Living (5550 Cardinal Place)
  • Workshop: Saturday, Jan. 26, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. (location to be announced)
  • Community meeting: Wednesday, Feb. 27, 7 p.m.-9 p.m. (location to be announced)

The framework for the new Landmark Mall had been approved under the Landmark/Van Dorn Corridor Plan in 2009. The vision for redevelopment is a mixed-use center with transit and community open spaces. The city anticipates much of the framework will remain the same, but the community feedback process could bring in other considerations: new uses, flexible uses, and factoring in new city policies on traffic safety and multimodal transportation.

The mall closed in 2017, although a Sears on the site remains open. Howard Hughes Corporation has been working toward a deal with Sears on the future of that site. The Carpenter's Shelter has temporarily moved into the mall as it constructs a new building at its 930 N. Henry Street site.

Howard Hughes Corporation plans for the site to include residences, plazas, green spaces, shops, restaurants and a movie theater.
