ALEXANDRIA, VA — Landmark Mall, the closed mall that will be transformed into a mixed-use development, has been renamed West End Alexandria.

Foulger-Pratt, a real estate investment and development firm, made the announcement Tuesday. The name change comes as demolition of the former mall is expected to begin this spring.

"West End will not be a new community, but rather an infrastructure to enable the existing community to thrive," said Cameron Pratt, managing partner and CEO of Foulger-Pratt, in a statement. "West End Alexandria will represent the best in what community can offer —a welcoming, inviting, inclusive space for business, medical care, residential opportunities as well as shopping and dining."

The development's anchor will be Inova Alexandria Hospital, which will be relocated from its current Seminary Road location. In November, an 11-acre land parcel was sold to the city's Industrial Development Agency, which then entered a 99-year lease agreement with Inova Health System. Inova will invest $1 billion to create an expanded hospital with a larger emergency room, private patient rooms, and the Inova Schar Cancer Institute.

Other parts of the development will include residential, retail, commercial, and entertainment uses featuring a central plaza, parks and public spaces, and a transit hub serving bus rapid transit, Alexandria's DASH Bus, and Metrobus. The Alexandria Fire Department's Fire Station 208 would also be relocated to the site. Demolition of the former mall is slated to begin this spring with the first buildings delivering in 2025.

The three joint-venture partners first announced their vision for the revitalization of the former Landmark Mall in December 2020, including plans for Inova’s new hospital campus to serve as a catalyst for the much-anticipated development of the entire West End Alexandria. Inova Health System, the leading nonprofit health care provider in Northern Virginia, will invest $1 billion to create a new medical campus, anchored by the relocation and expansion of its Alexandria hospital.
