Meet Alexandria City Public Schools' New Superintendent
Alexandria City Public Schools announced the district's new superintendent at a school board meeting Thursday night.
ALEXANDRIA, VA — The Alexandria City School Board has appointed Jharrett Bryantt, the current superintendent of Alaska's largest school district, as the next leader of Alexandria City Public Schools.
Bryantt will begin his new position Feb. 1, 2027, under a four-year contract that runs through June 30, 2030, with an annual salary of $310,000, according to the school division's announcement.
Bryantt has served as superintendent of the Anchorage School District since July 2022, overseeing more than 40,000 students across more than 90 schools. He previously held leadership positions in the Houston Independent School District and began his education career as a high school mathematics teacher, ACPS said.

In Anchorage, Bryantt has focused on early literacy, academic achievement and expanding access to college and career opportunities. The district's Academies of Anchorage initiative connects students with more than 200 businesses and community organizations.
Joining Thursday's school board meeting remotely, Bryantt said he looks forward to building relationships with Alexandria students, families and educators.

The appointment follows a national search conducted after former Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt announced her retirement, effective Oct. 1. Grace Taylor has been serving as acting superintendent during the transition.
Bryantt holds a bachelor's degree from Yale University and master's and doctoral degrees in education leadership and policy from the University of Texas at Austin, according to ACPS.
