VIRGINIA — For those looking to get outside for Memorial Day ceremonies, picnics and other gatherings, the holiday weekend weather in Northern Virginia is a mixed bag. Memorial Day itself may bring the greatest chance of severe weather.

As area residents begin their holiday weekend, Friday remains damp after scattered thunderstorms that affected parts of the region over the last two days. The National Weather Service's Baltimore Washington office said cloudy skies linger Friday morning before showers arrive from West Virginia. Temperatures remain in the high 70s and low 80s.

The National Weather Service has not issued a hazardous weather outlook for Friday but expects chances of thunderstorms on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. But the whole day shouldn't be dampened by rain — forecasters say the greatest chance for storms is the afternoon and evening hours.

On Memorial Day Monday, the National Weather believes a "more organized severe weather threat" could happen.

The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang say the likelihood of rain is highest on Saturday and Memorial Day Monday while Sunday could see "spotty" showers. If rain materializes this weekend, it could continue a streak of five rainy weekends in the DC region, according to the Capital Weather Gang.
