Mentor a Local Child and Have Fun While You Do It!

SOHO - Space of Her Own and Space of His Own is excited to announce that we are seeking mentors for the 2016-2017 school year.

Space of Her Own helps transform the lives of fifth-grade girls by pairing them with local professional women for a yearlong structured mentoring program. Using art as the catalyst, SOHO is designed to teach girls to value creativity, live healthy lives, communicate openly, and give back to others. In the end, SOHO not only provides girls with a personalized creative study space, but also empowers them with the confidence to succeed as a lifelong member of the SOHO Sisterhood club. SOHO meets once per week during the school year. Girls and their mentors enjoy dinner together followed by a creative arts project, which can range from designing mirror mosaics to completing a photography exhibit to building their own lap desk.

Space of His Own focuses on carpentry and team building activities. Boys and mentors enjoy dinner together, tackle team-building challenges, and develop a relationship through hands-on carpentry and arts lessons. Projects include building desks, shelves, and pencil boxes, and extracurricular activities may include canoeing and hiking.

Each project is focused around the central theme of helping each boy and girl create a space of his or her own. At the culmination of the year, mentees and mentors team up to renovate each program participant's bedroom or space using all of the projects they created together.
