More Severe Storms, Dangerous Heat In VA Forecast: See Details, Timing

Hot, moist air is expected to fuel more severe thunderstorms on Friday. Here's the latest forecast for Northern Virginia.

More severe storms are in store for Northern Virginia on Friday, while dangerous heat and humidity are expected to linger through the weekend, according to the latest forecasts.

A heat advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Friday for the region, the National Weather Service said. In the D.C. area, temperatures are expected to climb into the upper 90s, with heat index values reaching around 105 degrees.

"Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors," the National Weather Service warned. "Take extra precautions when outside, and take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke."

Expect high temperatures to remain in the upper 80s to the low 90s on Saturday and Sunday before much cooler air eases into the state by early next week.

The hot, moist air is expected to fuel more severe thunderstorms on Friday. The greatest chance of storms will be between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

The biggest threats accompanying Friday's storms will be damaging wind gusts or large hail.

While Saturday should be dry, shower and thunderstorm chances return late Sunday into next week as a cold front moves through the region.

Friday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Some of the storms could be severe. Increasing clouds and hot, with a high near 97. Heat index values as high as 106. West wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Friday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8pm. Some of the storms could be severe. Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear, with a low around 65. West wind around 7 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 88. North wind around 6 mph.

Saturday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 66. Light south wind.

Sunday: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 91. South wind 7 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Sunday Night: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 8pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 8pm and 11pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 63. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 81.

Monday Night: A chance of showers after 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 59. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Tuesday: A chance of showers, mainly before 8am. Partly sunny, with a high near 79. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
