Movement on Overhaul of Landmark Mall? Maybe
Washington Business Journal reports that Mill Creek Residential may begin construction next year on its Residences at Landmark.

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- "Projected construction start in 2017." Could those words mean the long-awaited Landmark mall overhaul might actually begin next year?
According to a report by Washington Business Journal, developer Mill Creek Residential recently noted, in a presentation to the City of Falls Church, a "projected construction start in 2017" for its Residences at Landmark.
Landmark Mall, located at 5801 Duke St., is owned by Howard Hughes Corporation, which has created a Web site to note development on the project.

The apartments are a piece of the puzzle to redevelop the mall -- demolition of the two-story central area of the shopping center and replacement of that portion with a mixed-use residential and retail complex with a traditional street grid, sidewalks, trees, and open space. The plan calls for approximately 250,000 to 300,000 square feet of retail and restaurants, along with approximately 350 to 400 apartments.

The next hurdle is for mall owner, the Howard Hughes Corporation in Texas, to submit its final site plans for engineering work on the plan, Maya Contreras, principal planner with Alexandria's Department of Planning and Zoning, said Friday. The overall plan was OK'd by the City last June and is good for the next three years.
"The ball is in their [Howard Hughes] court -- everything is still in progress," said Contreras. She noted that the City is in touch on at least a monthly basis with shopping center owner Howard Hughes Corporation.
The City of Alexandria also has a page dedicated to the Landmark Mall Redevelopment project, where residents can comment on the redevelopment project.
