ALEXANDRIA, VA — Today is National Puppy Day, and the organizers are encouraging everyone to visit their local animal shelter and adopt a homeless pooch.

Animal shelters in Northern Virginia and across America are filled with puppies looking for a new home. If you're looking for a new companion, check out the pooches on the Facebook page of the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria. They have plenty of pups ready for adoption, as well as cats, rabbits and other pets.

The Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation, in the Falls Church area, is celebrating March Madness with the arrival of a cute new group of puppies.

They'll be available for adoption in a couple of weeks after they're vaccinated and spayed or neutered. "In the meantime, they will be the recipients of a whole lot of love in a foster home," the foundation says on its Facebook page.
