Restaurant From Same Owner To Replace Columbia Firehouse In Old Town Alexandria

Josephine, a French brasserie and bar from Neighborhood Restaurant Group, is replacing the former Columbia Firehouse concept.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Columbia Firehouse in Old Town Alexandria is returning as a new concept under the same ownership.

French brasserie and bar Josephine will open on June 7 at 109 S. St. Asaph St., Eater DC first reported. The concept is owned by Neighborhood Restaurant Group, which also runs Evening Star Cafe, Planet Wine Shop, Vermilion, Buzz Bakery and Rustico in Alexandria.

The restaurant group's former Columbia Firehouse concept has not been open since being closed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the restaurant's website, Josephine is "inspired by classic Parisian eateries" and "brings the timeless charm and culinary traditions of France to the local dining scene." The menu from Chef Matt Cockrell will include classic favorites like French Onion Soup, Trout Amandine, and Beef Bourguignon along with French-inspired dishes like the Seared Red Drum with Tomato Concasse, Eggplant, Olives, Herbs de Provence and Squid Ink Beurre Blanc. The menu will have salads, appetizers, entrees, a raw bar and curated cheese list focused on cheeses from France.

On the drink menu, over 350 French wines will be offered, including a minimum 30 wines offered by the glass. Classic and innovative cocktails will be offered, with highlights like the Ramos Gin Fizz and full martini service. Draft and bottled beers and ciders come from local, French and Belgian brewers.

The ambiance of the restaurant is part of the French-inspired experience. According to the restaurant website, it will have lighting pendants once displayed in the Paris Metro. The restaurant is a multi-level space with a large dining room highlighted by a vaulted skylight, a bar, third-floor lounge, champagne bar, and 25-person courtyard.
