Next Smoke Alarm Installation Planned In Alexandria Neighborhood
Alexandria's fire department and partners are continuing an effort to install smoke alarms, which can improve safety during house fires.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — In a continued effort to get smoke alarms in all Alexandria homes, free smoke alarm installations will take place Saturday, July 29.
The Alexandria Fire Department will install smoke alarms in Alexandria's East Westover neighborhood, which is north of Old Town near the George Washington Memorial Parkway. The effort is organized by the Alexandria Smoke Alarm Safety Installation Taskforce, a partnership between the fire department, Friendship Firehouse and American Red Cross to install smoke alarms at locations around the city.
The smoke alarm installations will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 29. Volunteers are being sought to help install the smoke alarms. Registered volunteers will report to Fire Station 204 (900 Second St.) at 8 a.m. on July 29 for training. The volunteer shift is from around 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Breakfast, snacks, and water will be provided.

As smoke alarms can help against fire injuries and fatalities, the National Fire Protection Association recommends smoke alarms be installed on every level of a home and in all rooms where people sleep. From 2014 to 2018, 41 percent of U.S. fire fatalities were in homes with no smoke alarms, and 16 percent were in homes with smoke alarms not properly working.
