Parking Board Approves Right Turn On Red Ban In Old Town: Report

The Alexandria Traffic and Parking Board is recommending bans on turning on red lights across Old Town and at two other intersections.

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Alexandria came a step closer to banning all right turns on red lights when the city’s Traffic and Parking Board voted to approve the measure on Monday, according to a new report.

The Alexandria Brief reports that the board voted to ban right turns on red lights across Old Town and at two other intersections: at Mount Vernon Avenue and Glebe Road and at Quaker Lane, Janney's Lane and Seminary Road.

The ban would encompass every signalized intersection from the area bounded by First Street to the north, the City boundary to the south, Telegraph Road and the railroad tracks to the west and the Potomac River to the east.

The staff report recommending the ban cited traffic accidents, particularly pedestrian fatalities, as the reason for the restrictions, saying most pedestrian crashes involve vehicles failing to yield to pedestrians when turning left or turning right on a red light.

Now, the director of the Department of Transportation and Environmental Services will decide whether to implement the board’s recommendation.
