Paul Manafort's Alexandria Trial Delayed By 6 Days

Manafort will get extra time to review 40,000 pages of documents before his trial in Alexandria federal court begins.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Paul Manafort's trial previously set to begin Wednesday, July 25 in Alexandria has been pushed back by nearly a week to Tuesday, July 31.

Manafort, a former Trump campaign manager, had requested a delay of the trial in Alexandria federal court until after his Sept. 17 trial in DC. While Judge T.S. Ellis did not grant this request, he did give Manafort more time to look at 40,000 pages documents prosecutors just released.

The documents are from Richard Gates, a former business partner who will testify against Manafort. Gates, another former Trump campaign official pleaded guilty to charges in DC federal court earlier this year.

Ellis has also ordered five witnesses to testify against Manafort and unsealed their identities.

The prosecution and defense will work on a questionnaire for potential jurors on Tuesday, The Washington Post reported. Manafort prefers questions on jurors' sources of news, how involved they are in politics and if they voted in the 2016 election. The federal government wants to know jurors' opinions on the Internal Revenue Service and tax laws, as well as on Manafort and special counsel Robert Mueller.

Manafort, who is facing charges in Alexandria related to bank and tax fraud, was transferred to the Alexandria jail earlier in July by a judge's order. He had been jailed at Northern Neck Regional Jail after a judge revoked his bail in June.
