ALEXANDRIA, VA — The pedestrian-only zone in the unit block of King Street and part of the Strand has been extended as the City of Alexandria considers the future of the closure.

The unit block of King Street between Union Street and the Strand and the northern part of the Strand between Wales Alley and King Street have been a pedestrian-only zone since Memorial Day weekend. The closure was set to end after Labor Day weekend but was extended with approval by the Alexandria Traffic and Parking Board, Planning Commission and City Council. The pilot program is now set to run through Nov. 20.

The extension gives city staff and businesses time to consider permanent recommendations for the area, according to the pilot program's web page. A survey open through Sept. 13 allowing feedback on the pedestrian zone is open through Sept. 13.
