Blizzard 2016 Rewind: Snowy Scenes in Alexandria
A look back at the beginnings of the big blizzard in the City of Alexandria.

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- As of about midnight Friday, Alexandria counted about 6 to 8 inches of snow on the ground with more expected to fall through the night. Some are calling the blizzard “Snowzilla,” although we’re not sure that name is sticking.

Metro closed at 11 p.m. and is expected to stay closed through the weekend.

Police were on the scene of an assault and robbery Friday night in the west end of the City. Virginia State Police had handled 65 crashes and 158 disabled vehicles across Northern Virginia as of 10 p.m. Friday.
The City has 75 snow trucks clearing roadways. The City government said that if anyone needs a place to go to during the storm to call @CarpentrShelter at (703) 548-7500. A shelter at 930 N. Henry St. is open to anyone in need. The City of Alexandria has also established a snow customer service number. If you need help, call 703-746-HELP (703-746-4357).

As of about 12:30 a.m. Saturday morning, Dominion Power only had 18 customers without power out of more than 865,000 customers in Northern Virginia, according to its outage map.
