Revolutionary Fervor: Mount Vernon Offers Immersive War Of Independence Weekend

ALEXANDRIA, VA – As the United States prepares for its 250th birthday, who could be more excited than the people who maintain the first president’s home?

Mount Vernon is putting America’s uprising on show May 2-3 with the immersive Revolutionary War Weekend. It offers visitors the chance to experience life during the U.S. battle for independence, complete with smoking muskets, hemp rope tents and even old wooden-teeth himself.

The show promises battlefield demonstrations with actual cannon fire and displays of camp life, including tours of a replica of George Washington’s field tent and discussions of military techniques.

There’s also a glimpse of civilian life during war, with traveling wives and seamstresses there to describe their days and colonial arts and crafts to peruse and purchase.

Hundreds of costumed reenactors will be on hand to display and describe life in and around the army in the era before July 4 gave Americans anything to celebrate.

There will also be book signings on both days by experts on the first president and the American Revolution.

Mount Vernon operates year round, with hundreds of artifacts from George Washington’s life there and museums and demonstrations about the estate in his time. George and Martha Washington’s family tomb is also on the estate grounds.
