Hurricanes 2017: 10 Photos Of Utter Devastation
Major hurricanes have left more than 100 people dead in the U.S. this year along with tens of billions of dollars in damage.
This year's hurricane season has been the worst in recent memory, with major hurricanes sweeping through Texas, Louisiana, Florida and the Caribbean.
The eye of Hurricane Harvey, a Category 4 hurricane, made landfall around 10 p.m. Aug. 25 about 30 miles northeast of Corpus Christi. The storm brought sustained 130 mph winds along with flooding rains, dumping more than 50 inches of rain on parts of Houston.
Harvey left at least 70 people dead and damaged or destroyed more than 250,000 homes and hundreds of thousands of automobiles. The Insurance Council of Texas, the nation's largest state insurance trade association, estimated overall insured losses from Harvey at nearly $19 billion. Hurricane Irma rumbled through the Caribbean beginning Sept. 6 as a Category 5 storm, then set its sights on the Florida Keys. The Federal Emergency Management Agency estimated that the 400-mile-wide storm destroyed a quarter of the homes in the Keys and heavily damaged 65 percent. About 70,000 people live by the sea in trailers, small houses and multi-million-dollar mansions. At least 42 people in Florida were killed by the storm, the Miami Herald reported.

Property data company CoreLogic estimated damage to commercial and residential properties from Irma to range from $42.5 billion to $65 billion, including insured and uninsured losses.

Hurricane Maria, also a Category 5 storm, pummeled Dominica and ravaged Puerto Rico on Wednesday, leaving the entire island without electricity and triggering landslides and floods. At least nine people were killed.

The 2017 hurricane season runs through November.
