Summer Camps Offered With Coronavirus Precautions In Alexandria

Full day, half day and Friday activity options are available to Alexandria children this summer.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandria's Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities will hold several summer camps and programs for children of working families. The programs will include coronavirus precautions.

In addition to the previously-announced full day modified summer camp, there will be half-day summer camps and Friday Fun Days. Programs are available to City of Alexandria children ages 6 to 12 who have attended kindergarten through sixth grade. Participants and staff will follow federal, state and local health guidelines, including screening for COVID-19 symptoms, face mask use, and physical distancing.

Full Day Modified Summer Camp

  • July 6-August 14
  • A six-week program from Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
  • Locations at Charles Barrett, Charles Houston, Leonard “Chick” Armstrong, Patrick Henry, Nannie J. Lee, and William Ramsay Recreation Centers and Minnie Howard School
  • Before and after-care not available
  • Will include time for Alexandria Ciy Public Schools summer school activity and outdoor play
  • No field trips or swimming this summer
  • $249 cost (with financial assistance: free/reduced school meals $149.40; SNAP $124.50; TANF $75)

Half Day Summer Fun Camp

  • July 20-31 (afternoons only) and Aug. 3-14 (mornings or afternoons)
  • Two-week sessions between Monday and Friday
  • Mornings: 8 a.m.- 12 p.m. Afternoons: 2-6 p.m.
  • Locations at Chinquapin Park Recreation Center & Aquatics Facility and Jefferson-Houston School
  • $45 cost (with financial assistance: free/reduced school meals $27; SNAP $22.50; TANF $13.50)

Friday Fun Days

  • July 10, 17, 24, 31
  • Fridays from 9 to 11:30 a.m.
  • Locations at Jefferson-Houston field and Armistead Boothe Park
  • $5 cost per date
  • Includes classic cooperative group games, relays, and physical fitness
  • Dates may be canceled due to inclement weather

The Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities plans to open outdoor pools for the summer season with limitations on July 1.
