Swings In Weather Pattern Coming To VA: Latest Forecast

Northern Virginia could see a mix of showers, thunderstorms and shifting temperatures this week, weather forecasters say.

A big warm-up is in store for Northern Virginia this week, bringing with it swings in temperatures rain, and thunderstorms, according to the latest forecast.

"An active weather pattern this upcoming week will result in chances for showers each day. Widespread showers and some thunderstorms are likely by the middle of the week as a front stalls nearby. Temperatures warm to well above normal by mid week," the Baltimore-Washington, D.C., office of the National Weather Service forecasters said Monday morning.

There will be showers Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Wednesday will be the warmest day and will have the chance of thunderstorms, forecasts predict.

"Heavy thunderstorms will drench the mid-Atlantic region on Wednesday. Along with downpours that can slow travel, some storms may produce winds strong enough to break tree branches and send trash cans and recycling bins flying," AccuWeather said.

A general 1 to 4 inches of rain is forecast this week from Texas and the north-central Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes and central Appalachians, with locally higher amounts of up to 6 inches possible, AccuWeather said. Multiple rounds of disruptive rainfall are likely.

Highs will reach into the 80s Tuesday and Wednesday before a cold front Wednesday night brings showers and storms. After that, temperatures will fall with highs fluctuating from the 70s to the 80s for several days, forecasters said.

"Assuming a warm front lifts far enough north, Friday and Saturday should be rather warm, with highs well into the 70s and even a chance of 80s. However, if the front gets stuck to the south, it may end up notably less warm," according to The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang. "With the front nearby, there’s a chance of showers both days, mainly in the afternoon and/or evening. The nights should be rather mild, with lows in the 50s and 60s. A cold front may push through the area on Sunday, bringing yet another chance of showers and storms. Ahead of the front, highs should reach the 70s."
