Tax-Free Days Set For Alexandria Stores Amid No Virginia Sales Tax Holiday

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Virginia's sales tax holiday may not be happening, but there's still a tax-free incentive to shop at Old Town Alexandria's small businesses.

Old Town Business is organizing a tax-free weekend at participating boutiques during the weekend of Aug. 4 to 6. Participating boutiques will offer a 6 percent discount, which equals the amount of sales tax paid.

Virginia'ssales tax holidays have typically happened during the first weekend of August, allowing shoppers to buy qualifying school supplies, clothing, footwear, hurricane and emergency preparedness products, Energy Star products and WaterSense products without sales tax. Sales tax in Virginia typically ranges between 5.3 percent and 7 percent, which includes the state's 4.3 percent state sales tax, the 1 percent local option tax, and other applicable regional taxes. In Northern Virginia localities, the combined sales tax is 6 percent.

According to the Virginia Department of Taxation's website, the sales tax holiday was not extended in the Virginia General Assembly's 2022 Appropriation Act.
