Torpedo Factory to Host Second Thursday Art Night

Event on July 9 will feature opening reception for two new exhibits as well as kick off for Alexandria Live Music Week.

Second Thursday Art Night at the Torpedo Factory Art Center on Thursday, July 9, features an array of engaging events and activities for visitors throughout the evening.

6 – 9 pm:

  • Entire Building: Visitors can enter to win a prize package featuring four movie tickets, passes for the Potomac Riverboat Company, a gift certificate for The Art League Gallery, a family membership to the Alexandria Archaeology Museum and other perks via the Passport to Summer.
  • Target Gallery: Borders and Boundaries features 20 works in a variety of media—including photography, video, and human hair—that examines the outsider’s perspective. Artists, including six from the greater DC metropolitan region, explore religion, politics, psychology, geography, ethnicity, economics, and sexuality.
  • Alexandria Archaeology Museum: The Nation’s Guest: Lafayette in Alexandria, 1824 offers a collection of artifacts excavated from various sites in Old Town associated with the Marquis de Lafayette’s 1824 visit to Alexandria. Also on display is an edition of Lafayette’s memories, published in Paris in 1794. More information can be found at alexandriava.gov/archaeology.

7:30 pm: Opening reception for two exhibitions in The Art League Gallery. Shiho Rice: Quietly Cutting Through features Rice’s intricate Japanese-style cut paper, known as kirié. Gatherings is an exhibition of artwork by Art League artists that was juried by Jennifer Lindsay. Both are on view until Monday, August 3. More information is available via www.theartleague.org.

8 pm: Kicking off Alexandria Live Music Week, Crooks and Crows (http://www.reverbnation.com/crooksandcrows) performs honky tonk and Americana music.
