Escherichia coli, abbreviated as E. coli, is bacteria found in the environment, foods and intestines of people and animals, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most strains are harmless, but some can cause people to fall ill and experience diarrhea, urinary tract infections, respiratory illness, bloody stools, pneumonia and more.

Wegmans customers with Shoppers Club cards were notified through automated telephone calls.

Customers who purchased the recalled products can return them to the service desk for a full refund. If you have questions, call Wegmans Consumer Affairs at 1-855-934-3663 during regular business hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays).

Wegmans has 11 stores in Virginia, in Alexandria, Chantilly, Charlottesville, Fairfax, Fredericksburg, Gainesville, Henrico, Leesburg, Midlothian, Woodbridge and Sterling.

The Wegmans recall comes as a California farm linked to a nationwide outbreak of E. coli on romaine lettuce announced additional concerns that more vegetables, including cauliflower, could be impacted.
