The restaurant had temporarily closed in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Vermilion is part of Neighborhood Restaurant Group, which pivoted to a new model during the pandemic to keep staff working and customers fed. The group launched Neighborhood Provisions, an online marketplace for meals, ready-to-cook foods, pantry items and drinks for pickup or local delivery.

While some of the restaurant group's restaurants reopened, Neighborhood Provisions continues to operate, even offering special items for holidays. Columbia Firehouse, another Neighborhood Restaurant Group eatery in Old Town, remains temporarily closed. The restaurant group's other Alexandria eateries include Evening Star Cafe, Rustico and Buzz Bakeshop.
