Virginia General Election 2017: Alexandria Chooses Northam

Northam was always going to beat Gillespie in Alexandria, but the results were staggering.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—On Tuesday night, Northam and the Democratic Party swept all three statewide positions in a massive victory one year after the surprise election of President Donald Trump. Northam won with 53.87 percent of the vote, a nearly 10-point lead over Republican Ed Gillespie. The victory was made possible by his performance in Northern Virginia, including in Alexandria.

It wasn't a matter of who voters were going to choose for governor but rather by how much. A staggering 78.36 percent of votes went to Northam in the city.

Alexandria chose the Democratic victors in three statewide races, including Justin Fairfax for lieutenant governor and Mark Herring for attorney general. In the House of Delegates races, unopposed Dels. Mark Levine (D-45) and Charniele Herring (D-46) easily won re-election. Commonwealth's Attorney Bryan Porter and Sheriff Dana Lawhorne also ran unopposed in Alexandria and were re-elected.
