Virginia Transgender Student Makes Time's Most Influential List

Gavin Grimm, the face of the transgender bathroom debate, makes the list of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2017.

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- Gavin Grimm, the transgender Virginia student that is fighting his school's bathroom policy in court, has made Time Magazine's Most Influential People of 2017 list. The list, which features leaders, artists, titans, pioneers and icons, was announced Thursday.

Grimm, 17, is listed in the "Pioneers" category, speaking to how he has become a face of the transgender bathroom debate.

The Time profile written by transgender rights activist Janet Mock, said, "Gavin is the cherubic face of a reductive, dirty debate about trans people’s right to exist in public spaces without hostility, harassment and violence."

Grimm sued the school district in Gloucester after it adopted a policy in 2014 prohibiting him to use the bathroom of his choice. The policy had resulted from parent complaints when he had been using the boys restroom. His lawsuit, which argues the policy violated Title IX, got up to the Supreme Court.

In March, the Supreme Court sent the case down Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals after the Trump administration rescinded a bathroom rule protecting transgender students.
