What's Open, Closed For Indigenous Peoples' Day 2023 In Alexandria
Indigenous Peoples' Day on the federal Columbus Day holiday will result in schedule changes and closures in Alexandria.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — The federal Columbus Day holiday, recognized as Indigenous Peoples' Day in the City of Alexandria, will result in various closures and schedule changes.

City of Alexandria government offices: Closed on Monday, Oct. 9.

Alexandria City Public Schools: Oct. 10 is a student holiday and a professional development day for some staff. The only exception to the closure is Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School for its intersession program.
Animal Welfare League of Alexandria: On Monday, Oct. 9, the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Open at noon for adoptions. For an animal emergency or wildlife concern, call 703-746-4444.

Courts: Alexandria Circuit Court, Clerk of Circuit Court, General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court and Court Service Unit, located in the Alexandria Courthouse are closed on Oct. 9.
DASH Bus: On Monday, Oct. 9, the Alexandria Transit Company’s fare-free DASH bus service will operate on a Saturday schedule. The free King Street Trolley will operate from King Street Metro to Alexandria City Hall/Market Square, with service every 15 minutes, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. The Alexandria Transit Company administrative office will be closed. Elections: The Office of Voter Registration & Elections will be closed Monday, Oct. 9. Visit alexandriava.gov/Elections for details.
Health department: The Alexandria Health Department, the Flora Krause Casey Health Center and the Teen Wellness Center at Alexandria City High School will be closed on Monday, Oct. 9.
Historic Alexandria facilities: On Monday, Oct. 9, the Freedom House Museum, Gadsby’s Tavern Museum and Stabler–Leadbeater Apothecary Museum will be open regular hours from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. All other city museums will be closed. For more information, visit alexandriava.gov/Historic.
Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the Child Protective Services hotline at 703-746-5800; the Domestic Violence hotline at 703-746-4911; the Emergency Mental Health Services or substance use crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the Adult Protective Services hotline at 703-746-5778 or 988; and the Sexual Assault Hotline at 703-683-7273.
Impound lot: The city’s impound facility will be closed on Monday, Oct. 9. The impound facility is closed every Saturday and Sunday and on all observed City holidays. Fees will continue to accrue on Saturday and Sunday, but not on holidays.
Libraries: On Monday, Oct. 9, all Alexandria Library branches, and the Alexandria Law Library will be closed. Visit the Alexandria Library website for more information.
Metrorail: Open 5 a.m. to midnight on Monday, Oct. 9.
Parking: On Monday, Oct. 9, the Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces, residential permit parking districts and other areas with posted parking time limits. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces and does not permit parking in any location normally prohibited (for example, no-parking zones, loading zones, or spaces for persons with disabilities). Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced on Oct. 9.
Recreation, nature and arts centers: On Monday, Oct. 9, the Charles Houston and Patrick Henry Recreation Centers will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Other recreation and nature centers will be closed. The Torpedo Factory Art Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Trash and recycling: The schedule for residential trash/yard waste/recycling collection will be delayed by one day during the week of Monday, Oct. 9. Curbside food waste will follow the normal collection service schedule. The Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Recycling Center will be closed Oct. 9. Virginia DMV: On Monday, Oct. 9, all Virginia DMV centers in Northern Virginia (including 2681 Mill Rd. in Alexandria) will be closed. Many DMV services are available online at dmv.virginia.gov.
Virginia Railway Express: There is no VRE service on Oct. 9. For more information, visit www.vre.org.
