Winter Storm

Having grown up in the northeast enduring snow and ice throughout my childhood, I may be one of the few that enjoys a good snow and ice storm. In fact, my dad spent over 20 years plowing snow in my town. I have memories of him working through countless nights ensuring roads were clear for school busses the next day. When Dad came home for a meal and a few hours of rest before going back out, we were "shuushed" so he could get some uninterrupted sleep. Perhaps I have a different perspective of the snow removal crews and city officials in Alexandria after this storm because of those memories.

This wasn't like the snow of 2010 or 2016. There was no sleet or ice coverage, and the temperatures rose above freezing shortly after the snow stopped falling. 2026 was different and it is still cold and this snow and ice will linger for many days.

The city knew this storm was coming and they put a full court press on responding and despite what many are saying on social media, they did a great job! They published what the priority route clearances would be and they pre-treated those roads. Everyone wants to live on a quiet street or a cul de sac until there is a big snow! Then the keyboard warriors type angry and demand answers and accuse people of not doing their jobs!

Alas, the emergency routes and main access roads were cleared quickly, and the city did exactly what they said they would. Many residents of Alexandria stayed ahead of the snow and ice and cleared their sidewalks and steps throughout Sunday as the sleet discontinued. It was a joy to see neighbors working together to shovel out cars for those who were medical providers or other critical jobs that don't enjoy the luxury of teleworking or taking leave time. Sadly, some waited until the precipitation ceased and their task became more difficult, and a simple plastic snow shovel wasn't going to get the job done!

The city runs a volunteer program where one can volunteer to shovel for elderly or physically challenged neighbors. The city even provides free salt for volunteers to pick up and use for those who are unable to shovel on their own. Bravo Alexandria!

The drivers of plow trucks, the emergency services employees, and everyone involved in managing the storm worked through the night into the next day and continue to work. We owe them a debt of gratitude. It's a thankless job and even when we see them on our street, we are super happy but also hope they don't block our driveway in too badly! Thank you, Alexandria, for everyone who had a role in seeing us through this storm. You matter and your service to the city is greatly appreciated.
