175 Jobs Added By Reston-Area Blue Sky Innovators In $7M Fairfax County Expansion
The defense technology company plans a secure innovation lab above its Fairfax County office for government customers.
RESTON, VA —Blue Sky Innovators LLC plans to invest $7 million to expand its Northern Virginia operations in Fairfax County, a move expected to create 175 new jobs, Gov. Abigail Spanberger announced on Monday.
The defense technology company plans to build out 20,000 square feet above its existing Fairfax County office for a secure modular agile collaboration hub software innovation laboratory called SkyLab to accommodate government customers.
Spanberger said the project adds to Virginia's defense technology footprint in Northern Virginia.

With unparalleled access to the nation’s top talent and decision makers, the Commonwealth is ready to help businesses grow as we build an economy that works for every Virginian.”
Blue Sky Innovators delivers advanced technologies and operational insights to government and commercial clients focused on national security challenges, according to a release. The company said it has innovators across five states and works with the U.S. Department of War and intelligence community in areas including prototyping, research and development, disruptive technologies, electromagnetic spectrum operations, integration, and acquisition.

“SkyLab represents our belief that speed, security, and collaboration must coexist to meet today’s national security challenges,” said Blue Sky Innovators CEO Tim Tkacz. “This investment demonstrates the pace and commitment required to deliver innovation where it matters most, at the point of mission execution.”
Secretary of Commerce and Trade Carrie Chenery said, “By making it easier for government and business to collaborate in a safe and secure setting, Blue Sky is driving innovation and safeguarding our national security.”
The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority to secure the project for Virginia. Spanberger approved an $840,000 grant from the Commonwealth’s Opportunity Fund to assist Fairfax County with the project, and funding and services for employee training will be provided through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program.
Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeffrey C. McKay said the company’s continued growth and the launch of SkyLab will bring together innovators and mission partners from across Fairfax County and Northern Virginia. State Sen. Jennifer Boysko said she was pleased to welcome the 175 new employees to the 38th District, while Del. Karen Keys-Gamarra said the community continues to support technology businesses.
