$30K Raised To Cover Funeral Costs For South Lakes Grad Shyon Smith
More than 500 donors contributed to the GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses for South Lakes High School Grad Shyon Smith.
RESTON, VA — A GoFundMe campaign started Wednesday to help cover funeral expenses for 18-year-old Shyon Smith reached its $30,000 goal thanks to 555 donors.
Smith, who was a standout player on the South Lakes football team, died on Aug. 8. He had planned to enter Radford University this fall.
"Shyon Smith was the epitome of 'to know him is to love him,'" Marc Beks wrote on the GoFundMe page. "His contagious laugh and magnetic sense of humor drew people to him. Without hesitation, he was always willing to help his family and friends. Shyon’s warmhearted personality, devotion for his loved ones, and outstanding athletic abilities inspired all who crossed his path."

Beks launched the GoFundMe campaign to help Smith's family give him a "proper funeral service."
"While no amount of money can take away the pain, we hope easing their financial burden will bring some comfort in their grief," Beks wrote.

Smith played football for four years at South Lakes. The Reston Youth Association posted the following message on its Facebook page:
"He was a fierce competitor on the field and had such a warm and caring personality off the field. Always respectful and he had a smile that could light up a room. He will be missed."
As of 2:30 p.m. on Monday, the GoFundMe campaign had raised $30,245 toward its $30,000 goal.
