MERRIFIELD, VA — Scout Space, a Reston-based satellite technology company, plans to invest more than $1 million to expand its operations in Fairfax County, Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s office announced Monday.

The company will add 2,650 square feet of office space at a new manufacturing facility in Merrifield, expanding beyond its existing Reston location. The project is expected to create 31 jobs in Virginia, according to the governor’s office.

Scout Space specializes in systems and software deployed on satellites. Founded in 2019, the company develops sensor systems, autonomy software and data platforms intended for cross-orbit intelligence and space operations. Its hardware and software are deployed on orbital and geostationary satellites, according to the release.

“Scout Space’s expansion in Fairfax County reinforces the Commonwealth’s role as a national center of innovation, where cutting-edge technology and mission-driven expertise come together to strengthen our nation’s capabilities,” Spanberger said in a statement.

Scout Space CEO Josiah Gruber said Fairfax County offers “an exceptional environment for innovation, talent, and collaboration” and called the expansion a response to growing demand for space domain awareness capabilities.

“This expansion reflects both the increasing demand for advanced space domain awareness capabilities and our commitment to building the technologies that enable safer, more dynamic operations in orbit,” Gruber said.

Fairfax County Board Chairman Jeff McKay said the company’s growth reflects the county’s innovation economy and its role in aerospace, defense technology and advanced manufacturing.

“Companies like Scout Space are developing cutting-edge technologies that strengthen our national security, expand the commercial space economy, and create high-quality jobs for our residents,” McKay said.

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority to secure the project. Scout Space will receive support through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program, which provides consulting and funding to companies creating new jobs to help with employee recruitment and training.

The Virginia Innovation Partnership Corporation previously supported Scout Space with early-stage commercialization and seed funding, according to the governor’s office.
