About 200 NoVA Jobs Could Be Cut After Deal Falls Through

RESTON, VA — Bechtel Power Corporation plans to cut about 200 positions at its Reston office after the company and TerraPower LLC failed to reach an agreement on the next phase of a nuclear energy project, according to a notice filed with Virginia workforce officials.

The layoffs are expected to begin on or about Nov. 16 at Bechtel's office at 11955 Democracy Drive in Reston, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice signed Sept. 13 by Suchit Chopra, Bechtel's Natrium Project director.

Bechtel has been working with TerraPower on the Natrium Demonstration Project. According to the WARN notice, the two companies were unable to reach an agreement on the project's next phase and "have decided to move forward separately."

Bechtel Looking For Other Assignments For Workers

As a result, Bechtel said it will scale down operations supporting the project and reduce staffing at the Reston location.

The company estimated that approximately 200 positions and employees will be affected. Bechtel said it is working to identify other assignments for those employees, which could reduce the number ultimately laid off.

If other assignments cannot be found, however, the layoffs will be permanent, according to the notice. The affected employees are not represented by a union and do not have bumping rights.

The notice was sent to Virginia workforce officials and Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeff McKay (D-At Large).

Bechtel did not include a list of the affected job titles and the number of employees in each category in the announcement provided to Patch.
