Founder of Reston-Headquartered Home-Building Company Donates $50 Million for Inova Cancer Center

Governor of Virginia Terry McAuliffe announced Monday a historic gift of $50 million from Dwight C. Schar and his wife Martha to Inova for the Inova Dwight and Martha Schar Cancer Institute, according to Inova, in a post on its Facebook page.
It is the largest gift to a healthcare organization in Virginia, according to Inova.
Schar, founder and chairman of NVR and his wife are giving the hospital system $50 million to develop a cancer research institute that will bear their names as part of a 117-acre medical campus in Merrifield.

The $200 million cancer institute is aiming to open by 2018 at the former Exxon Mobil campus, located across the street from Inova’s main hospital.
Dwight Schar is also a part-owner of the Washington Redskins football team.
