FAIRFAX, VA — U.S. Rep. James Walkinshaw (D-Fairfax) kicked off his reelection campaign on Friday to represent the 11th Congressional District, which encompasses most of Fairfax County, Fairfax City, and the Town of Herndon.

“When I ran in last summer’s special election to succeed my mentor, the late Congressman Gerry Connolly, I made a promise: I would fight for Virginia families, defend our democracy by putting a check on the reckless Trump Administration, and work to build an economy that works for all,” said Walkinshaw. “I have kept that promise.”

Walkinshaw defeated Republican Stewart Whitson in the Sept. 9, 2025 special election to fill the vacant congressional seat following Connolly's death the previous May.

Last month, fellow Bree Fram, a retired U.S. Space Force colonel who was pushed out of the service by the Trump administration, declared her candidacy for the 11th District seat. Since Fram is running as a Democrat, she and Walkinshaw would face it other in the June 6 primary.

No other candidates have declared their intention to run for the 11th District congressional seat.

Since being sworn-in, the freshman congressman has zeroed in on protecting federal employees and taking on the Trump administration.

“As the only Democrat on both the House Oversight and Homeland Security Committees, I have worked every day to hold the administration accountable, protect federal workers, defend the rule of law, and lower costs for hardworking Virginia families. But this work is far from finished," he said.

Walkinshaw emphasized that the stakes could not be higher, describing it as a pivotal moment for American democracy.

“In the coming months, I will be campaigning vigorously to protect fair representation and ensure every Virginian’s voice is heard," he said. "I’m also energized by the opportunity to represent communities from my home in Fairfax to the Shenandoah Valley, including the community that raised me – Prince William County and the Cities of Manassas and Manassas Park.”

As the Braddock District representative on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, Wakinshaw led efforts to ban guns from libraries and rec centers, extend tax relief to seniors and military families, and reduce carbon emissions. Prior to that he served as Connolly's chief of staff on Capitol Hill for more than a decade.
