Lately I have seen an increase in clients asking what kind of exercises can they do to reduce pain and help them feel better. It is a good question but the answer is not as simple as it may seem.
Health-based exercise is somewhat of a new concept. Most people exercise to lose weight or get in shape with the secondary hope that these changes will improve their health. Health-based exercises target various body parts and organ systems to help stimulate healing and repair.
There is a totally different mind-set that accompanies a true health-based program. You want a quiet setting to practice your exercises where you can concentrate without distraction on the movements and the feelings of your body.
In a health-based approach, you are more concerned about how the exercises make your body feel or the sensations that surround the movement than you are about burning calories or creating six-pack abs.
The Posture Perfect! classes I started some three years ago embody the health-based concept. Each exercise in the classes is targeted to a specific part of the body helping that area heal and balance itself.
In total, all the exercises help with relaxation, circulation, joint stabilization and a reduction in inflammation. When practiced on a regular basis, these exercises help to reduce pain and restore strength and balance to both your body and mind.
