Hockey: South Lakes Still Undefeated

It was a big night at the Ashburn Ice house on Friday as as the top two teams left in the JV division of the Northern Virginia Hockey League met.  Both South Lakes (7-0-1) and  Freedom / Dominion (6-0-1) entered the game wihtout a loss. In the end, South Lakes remained undefeated, winning the game 4-2.

Captain Nick Beaulac, fed by Corey  Baumgartner, scored the first goal of the game only 25 seconds into the first period. It would be another 11 minutes, 10 shots, and 2 penalty kills before the next goal, which belonged to freshman Logan Nasr, off assists from Dan Duncan and Zach Clonts.

Freedom / Dominion tried to regroup, however a hole in the defense allowed Baumgartner to take the puck on a breakaway and score a third goal for South Lakes, allowing them to finish the period ahead 3-0.

 Freedom / Dominion made some adjustments during the third period, and were able to score two goals in just over a minute.  

Capitalizing on a turnover, South Lakes' Logan Nasr scored with only 30 seconds left in the second period.  

While there was lots of back and forth in the third, penalties from Freedom / Dominion were a clear problem. Only a minute into the period, South Lakes went on the power play on a roughing call, but the Seahawks were not able to capitalize on the man advantage.

A minute after that penalty ended, another penalty for tripping was assessed on Freedom / Dominion, and within that penalty, South Lakes got a 5-on-3 session for a Freedom / Dominion high stick call.

Freedom / Dominion's goalie, Thorpe Lichtenberg and South Lakes' goalie Danny Hilliard helped keep both sides scoreless during man advanatges in the third.

South Lakes plays its final game of the season Friday against  Briar Woods / West Potomac at the Ashburn Ice House at 6:10 pm. With the championship probably already decided, and South Lakes in control because they win the league's tie breakers.
