Huge Meeting On Controversial Reston Zoning Amendment Set For Oct. 23

The amendment would raise the population density limit of Reston, which opponents argue would cause the population to explode.

RESTON, VA — Fairfax County has rescheduled a major community meeting on a proposed zoning amendment for Reston that attracted such a huge crowd last month it had to be cancelled.

The meeting will be held Monday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. at the South Lakes High School cafeteria located at 11400 South Lakes Drive, according to an announcement from the county. That is a larger venue than the previous location, which was the cafeteria at Lake Anne Elementary School.

During the meeting, Fairfax County's Department of Planning and Zoning (DPZ) will "provide information on the proposed Zoning Ordinance Amendment for the Reston Planned Residential Community (PRC) district," the announcement notes.

The amendment would increase the population density limit of Reston from 13 persons per acre to 16. The proposal has infuriated Restonians, who argue that the infrastructure of Reston is ill-equipped to handle the rapid growth they believe it would cause.

Throngs of people packed the Lake Anne Elementary School cafeteria Sept. 25, prompting Fairfax County Supervisor Cathy Hudgins to announce that the meeting would be postponed until a bigger space could be booked.
