Lake Anne Dam Just Got Approved For A Big State Grant

The dam at Lake Anne is in need of some upgrades and a six-year certification, the Reston Association says.

RESTON, VA — The Reston Association has entered into a grant agreement with a Virginia agency that will provide $7,295 to pay for an evaluation of the dam at Lake Anne.

The Lake Anne dam has been operating under two two-year "Conditional Operation and Maintenance Certificates" issued by the state, but the RA wants a recertification for a six-year permit. The organization also wants to find ways to save more money on making required upgrades to the dam, hence the study, according to an RA statement.

GKY & Associates will be the consulting engineers on the project.

"Previous to seeking the grant money for the evaluation, RA had obtained three potential construction solutions to bring the dam into compliance with state regulations," the statement reads. "The cost of those proposed solutions ranged from approximately $2 million to $4 million. Additional and more recent guidance provided by the state allows for evaluating certain aspects of the dam, including the spillway capacity and downstream impacts. RA opted to pursue an evaluation under this new guidance, which could result in a solution without excessive costs associated with extensive renovations to the dam."

The evaluation should take about 45 days, and the total evaluation cost is $14,590, which means the RA will cover half and the other will be covered by Virginia.
